Turkana Chamber of Commerce, A Call to Fulfill Your Civic Duty to the Business Community and Residents

The Turkana Chamber of Commerce holds a critical mandate, to protect and defend the business community and ensure that public goods such as water, electricity, roads, and security are adequately provided for. However, recent events have shown a disconnect between this duty and the services offered to the people and businesses of Turkana. It is not enough to recognize the challenges posed by single-service providers or the gaps in the provision of essential services these issues must be highlighted and addressed with urgency for the benefit of both businesses and the wider community.
Every blackout, water shortage, security lapse, and instance of poor infrastructure or healthcare services impacts the economic fabric of Turkana. The Chamber cannot afford to wait until people complain. The time to act is now.
As a body tasked with representing the business community, the Chamber must prioritize the wellbeing of its members and the public at large. Public goods such as water, electricity, healthcare, and a robust road network are critical for any business to thrive. Without these, local businesses struggle, and so does the community that relies on them. It is your civic duty to ensure that these gaps are made public through your structures and partnerships, advocating for solutions before crises emerge.
Failing to engage with these issues undermines the Chamber's mission and weakens the community it represents. Publicly highlighting service delivery shortcomings can spur action from relevant authorities—both the national and county governments—who have a clear civil duty to serve every citizen, including the people of Turkana.
Now more than ever, the Chamber must align itself with the concerns of Turkana’s residents and the business community. Public advocacy, coupled with partnerships with national and county governments, can create the pressure needed to address the chronic service gaps that plague the region. Businesses depend on a stable environment to flourish, and it is your role to ensure that this environment exists.
By proactively defending the interests of the business community, you simultaneously protect the community at large. The Chamber must raise its voice on behalf of the people and stop waiting until problems escalate into public outcry. This is not just about business; it’s about the community that consumes these essential services and their right to a better life.
The Turkana Chamber of Commerce must recognize the vital role it plays in safeguarding the interests of both businesses and the public. This is a moment for reflection and action. While the challenges faced by service providers are undeniable, it is your duty to confirm these gaps, highlight them, and demand better from those responsible for delivering public goods. The choice is yours, and it is my considered view that the Chamber has not been doing enough. I invite open dialogue and opinions, but the message is clear: your community needs you, and it is time to step up.
